PROPER USE OF THE NAME CFA Institute has clear guidelines on how their name should be used. The "rule" is very simple: the only proper use of the name CFA Institute is just that – CFA Institute. There is no acronym (e.g., "CFAI") or abbreviation of the name (for example, "The Institute"). It also is preferred that the possessive use of the name (i.e, "CFA Institute's") be avoided whenever possible. The request that Member Societies adhere to these guidelines is made to both maintain a consistent branding image and keep the trademark from being diluted. By ensuring that our name is consistently used in the same manner, CFA Institute staff is better able to protect the trademarks and service marks that accompany the name and build brand recognition.
